Create a tiered discount with a cap

The goal: a VIP code that gives 15% on Accessories, 10% on Apparel, 5% on everything else — but never more than $100 total, no matter how big the cart gets. Generous headline, bounded cost.

  1. Open DiscountsCreate discount. Keep Type = Code and enter VIP15.

  2. Build the cart groups. In the offer’s first product discount (added below), open the group picker → Create/Manage groups+ New group:

    • Group Accessories: under Include, browse and pick your Accessories collection. Create group.
    • Repeat for Apparel.
    • Group Everything else: leave Include empty and put both collections under Exclude — empty include means the whole catalog, so this group is “everything not already tiered.” Three groups, and every item belongs to exactly one.
  3. In What customer gets?, add three Product discounts to the offer via the Discount button:

    • Percentage off 15, aimed at the Accessories group.
    • Percentage off 10, aimed at Apparel.
    • Percentage off 5, aimed at Everything else.
  4. Optional gate — hit ConditionCart subtotalGreater than 120 so the code only activates on qualifying orders. Add Customer tagAny ofVIP if the code is for tagged customers only.

  5. Now the ceiling. Open SafeGuards (next to the code field), tick Cap total discount amount, and set Max amount to 100.

  6. Check the right rail: Purchase types as you want them, Usage limits if the code should be limited, Combines with left all-off (the safe default).

  7. Save.

A qualifying cart gets each group’s rate applied item by item — and because the three groups are exclusive, there’s never a question of which rate an item gets. If the math wants to give more than $100 — say a huge cart earns $128 — every part is trimmed proportionally so the total lands exactly on your cap. The customer sees a great discount; your ledger sees a bounded one.

Two defaults are quietly working for you the whole time: Skip on-sale items and Skip gift cards are on in SafeGuards, so the tiers never touch marked-down products or gift cards unless you deliberately turn those off.

Use the code on a test cart with items from each collection. Verify each group’s rate, then build an oversized cart and confirm the total discount stops at $100.

  • Multiple offers (not just multiple product discounts) create spend tiers — “10% over $100” / “15% over $250” — with Discount strategy deciding which offer wins.
  • The same offer works behind thousands of unique codes instead of one shared code.
